GOLDE Turmeric: A Black-Owned Wellness Blend That Belongs In Everyone's Pantry

Although it’s been around for centuries, turmeric is finally becoming a wellness household staple. Many people purchase it at health food stores and make their own holistic concoctions. But did you know there’s a black-owned brand that uses this ancient superfood - blending all the right ingredients for an instantly-ready golden turmeric milk?

Launched by Trinity Wofford just seven months ago, GOLDE Turmeric is a powerful powder blend of creamy coconut milk with organic botanicals, including turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. All of their ingredients are sustainably sourced from certified-organic farms from around the world.

I grew up being really engaged with wellness and holistic health, and have always known that I wanted to pursue something entrepreneurial. I wanted to build a wellness brand that was both accessible and aspirational, something wasn’t very prevalent at the time.

BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT TURMERIC???

Trinity explains that turmeric is a native to South East Asia that just may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence! Turmeric is a keystone in a lot of Asian cooking and plant medicine. In traditional cultures like those, it's common for food and medicine to wrapped up as one (As it should be). Turmeric is particularly prevalent in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as well.

As a brand, we try to be really respectful of the rich history that turmeric has, rather than treating it as some sort of trendy superfood that just popped up in the western diet one day. We also don’t claim to be experts in the cultures that have integrated turmeric into their self-care practices for hundreds (or thousands) of years. There’s a very careful balance in appreciating, but not appropriating, the wonders of this incredible plant.

My mom actually got me into turmeric. She has a condition called rheumatoid arthritis, which is essentially severe inflammation of your joints. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. When she started taking it and noticed a difference in how she felt, I started paying attention.

Being a Woman of color has significantly influenced this golden brand as a proud black-owned entity. Understanding the health risks to the black community stemming from various layers of racism, has created the foundation for pushing wellness in communities of color. Similar to Jennifer Sterling, Trinity is tackling black stress from the inside out:

 

I remember learning in a class at NYU that black people have a higher mortality rate than white people, and that some of this may be explained by the everyday stress that accumulates from racism. This is literally a matter of life and death for our community. It’s so important that we take time for self-care, be it through meditation, curling up with a good book, or experimenting with powerful plants like turmeric.

The world of commercialized “wellness” is unfortunately quite similar to the beauty industry, in that women of color are at best an afterthought, and more often completely removed from the dialogue. We’ve seen the beauty world make major strides as more WOC form their own businesses to suit our needs — FENTY beauty is the most recent example, with their incredible range of shades. If we don’t build something for us, no one else will.
