PUR Home: A Black Owned Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent Brand That Just Hit The Market

As we continue the wellness discussion - we are starting to realize how important it is for our skin to be nourished with healthy products. Minimizing the chemicals that are in our lotions and butters and supporting brands give us that non toxic glow, is becoming a priority. Additionally, we continue to dive into the complicated but very necessary discussions of supporting fashion brands that don't use pesticides on their cotton production and are ethically produced.

But what about the detergents that we use to wash our cloths? Our clothing is like our second skin so it needs to be just as non-toxic as our shea butter and just as consciously crafted as our sustainable garments!

Now there are several earth friendly laundry detergents in the market place ... but how many do you know that are black-owned? We finally found one - a very small locally-based (start up) brand called PUR Home:

When and why did you start PUR Home? What does the name mean?

PUR Home launched May 7th, 2017.  PUR Home's name means that we strive to give and make household cleaning products that use the purest of ingredients so that you can have the PUR(est) Home, free from harmful toxins found in store bought cleaners.  It was our goal when formulating to create products that the cleaner does not have to sit on whatever surface you are cleaning for 10 minutes before you clean it.  Our products are safe and effective and non-toxic so you can use and clean your surface immediately.

Why is eco-friendly laundry detergent a big deal for you?

Creating a true eco-friendly/green laundry detergent was huge for us.  One, we wanted transparency of the ingredients used. Second, we wanted a true green and eco-friendly laundry detergent.  Those phrases are tossed around so much lately and we went through several formulations before deciding what ingredients to use in our laundry detergent.

Our Laundry Detergent's ingredients are:

Purified Water, Organic Potassium Cocoate, Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxpropoylsulfonate, Decycl Glucoside, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Percarbonate, Pure Essential Oil Blend and Citric Acid

We source our ingredients from several different suppliers including Colonial Chem which is our main ingredient supplier.  All of our suppliers are carefully selected because they do not provide any ingredients that test on animals or support fair trade and sustainably sourced ingredients.

Does natural and organic cleaning products work (disinfect) as well as conventional versions?

Absolutely, Yes! Our cleaning products are surfactant based, which is what you'll find in "conventional versions."  The difference is we've replaced harsh sulfates with milder surfactants, and added other ingredients to build the product's cleaning ability.

How do you define sustainability?

Sustainability to us, first means be kind to Momma Nature.  We have a high respect for her and consider her with each product that we produce.  We make sure that we are providing clear recycling or reuse education and information on green and eco-friendly living.  We are also very cognizant of world issues and employ best practices when selecting ingredients that are Fair Trade and Sustainably Sourced.  We support of local community as well as the global community.

Does being a woman of color influence your brand? If so, how?

Yes,  We try to connect with other woman of color to bring awareness to the affects of toxic cleaning products.  Being a woman of color is what I think of when I am choosing products to launch because I want to educate my community so much.  I deal with so many of the same health issues such as thyroid, PCOS, infertility and more and I have people in my family that suffer from other chronic illnesses and I am always either educating them on better, non-toxic choices in food, in cosmetics, and in cleaning products and that is my base and passion and part of our company's mission.

What has inspired you the most?

We are inspired by people's desire to be more eco-friendly and that we can be part of their discussion and lifestyle change!

What can we expect from you in the near future?

We hope to continue getting the word out about PUR Home! We want people to know us.  We are definitely headed to stores next year!  We want people to be able to pick us up in their local stores.
