Blk Girls Green House: Community Space & Plant Haven
Our lives are intertwined with the lives of plants; from the trees that line the sidewalks to the subway or the mountains that command the distant view on our drives, plants are a part of our world. It only makes sense that when looking for plants to live in our homes we find them in a place that embraces this balance of community, world, and flora. That’s why this week, we are honored to highlight Blk Girls Green House! Based in Oakland, CA, this place was founded by Kalkidan Gebreyohannes and J’Maica Roxanne who have created a space that houses your dream plants, expert-knowledge, and a community environment.
Check out the interview:
When and why did you start Blk Girls Green House?
Blk Girls Green House opened our doors on August 1, 2020. We started with the idea that beautiful things and spaces still deserved room to exist even amongst all of the ugliness that the world throws our way.

How do you define sustainability?
We define sustainability as thoughtful and intentional practices whose benefits can be reaped beyond just myself and the time that I have here on earth.
Is there ancestral or historical relevance tied to your work at BGGH?

I think as Black people, our work and connection to plants and the earth is inherent. Both Kalu & I grew up with references to growing/caring for plants, and as we grew older, incorporated those teachings into our personal lives, and eventually BGGH.
What were the greatest challenges you faced in realizing your idea? Biggest Rewards?
I think one of our biggest challenges has been constantly pivoting. Entrepreneurship is a daunting career path, and once you're in it and realize all of the intricacies that can't be planned for, like a global pandemic followed by a recession, you quickly learn how to make the best of what you've got. The biggest reward for us comes from being able to provide opportunity. We've been the first wholesale client for a lot of our featured vendors, which allows them the opportunity to create economic security, which directly impacts their livelihood. It's a full circle moment for sure.

What do you think the community aspect of BGGH has added to the life of your shop?
Our community IS the life of our shop. We had the idea, but if it wasn't for the love and energy and reciprocity of the people that support us, it wouldn't be possible for us to maintain. Communities only thrive when sustainability is present. No individual has everything all the time, but through community we're able to fill in those gaps when they arise and ensure that everyone can stay afloat.
Anything else you feel called to share with the readers?
We just want to extend our deepest gratitude for everyone who's supported us in any way, it gives us life and reminds us of our why. If ever you're in West Oakland...pull up!!
