I founded Kajal New York in 2021 with the goal of transforming the luxury fashion industry by placing equal emphasis on product, people, and the planet. Our mission is to create sustainable and socially responsible fashion that leads the charge in reducing waste and carbon emissions.

How has your heritage influenced your production techniques?

My upbringing as an Indian American woman has greatly influenced my approach to production. As a woman-owned business, promoting gender equality is of the utmost importance to me. We produce our garments in a unique blend of locations - both New York City and India - that reflect the diverse cultural influences of my heritage. In New York, we work with culturally diverse factories, while in India we partner with a woman-owned and operated factory that provides fair wage employment opportunities for women from lower-income backgrounds.

Are there any local influences in the garments made in India?

Yes, one of our upcoming collections will feature a collaboration with an Indian furniture and print designer, utilizing traditional printmaking techniques sourced and produced locally in India.

At Kajal New York, we aim to create clothing that is both bold and elegant, with a conscious. Our garments are sensual, dangerous, and timeless, with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Our ideal customers are modern, eco-conscious women who value quality over quantity.

Greatest hardships and greatest rewards of creating a company as a WoC?

One of the greatest challenges has been the lack of financial, infrastructure, and human resources support compared to competitors in my niche. However, the greatest reward has been realizing my own strength and capabilities as a business owner, and believing in myself to find solutions to any problem that may arise. The key is to recognize your own worth and have faith in yourself.

Anything else you feel called to share with readers?

In recent years, I have fundamentally changed my perspective on fashion, consumption, and the design process. I have learned to value the longevity and versatility of high-quality garments over short-lived seasonal trends, and I am inspired to create clothing that can be worn year-round and make women feel their best.
